Monisha Merchant for CU Regent

Colorado Roots - Global Vision

Monisha brings to the University of Colorado over a decade of experience in the private, public, and non-profit sectors. She has worked for Fortune 100 global companies and served her community as a volunteer Big Sister, Red Cross Disaster Action Team member, and K-12 science outreach programs director. She has worked across the U.S., China, and Indonesia. Monisha has a proven track record of working with diverse stakeholder groups to successfully accomplish common objectives, which is a key responsibility for the Board of Regents.

Born and raised in Colorado, Monisha is the daughter of immigrants who came to America to pursue their higher education aspirations. They came to Colorado over 30 years ago to establish their small business.

A Leader in Business

Monisha is a Director at Colorado-based Level 3 Communications in Broomfield. Monisha previously worked as a consultant with Booz Allen Hamilton in Washington, DC, where she advised leaders at key federal grant-making institutions including NASA, the Department of Homeland Security, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. At Lucent Technologies, Monisha managed the hardware test activities for long distance optical telecommunications equipment.

A Passionate Public Servant

A Harry S. Truman Scholar, Monisha always finds ways to mesh her commitment to public service with her engineering and management training, across the United States and overseas.

In Shanghai, China, Monisha set up computer labs and taught networking technologies and web design to high school students through the China Education Technology Initiative. In business school, she helped organize a Yale Delegation to Nigeria and met government, corporate, and social enterprise leaders advancing Nigeria's infrastructure.

As the Deputy Country Director for an NGO in Indonesia, Monisha managed multi-million dollar post-Tsunami reconstruction projects bringing safe drinking water to schools and homes. She worked with diverse stakeholders to develop community health and sanitation plans.

A Lifelong Advocate for Education

Monisha understands the power of education to change lives and communities. As a volunteer Big Sister, Monisha taught them to be proud of their potential. Monisha organized "Introduce a Girl to Engineering" and "Take Our Daughters to Work Day" programs to show young women what opportunities lie before them in high tech careers-and gave them the tools to make it happen.

A Product of Colorado

Monisha is a Colorado native and a proud graduate of the Jefferson County Public Schools. She knows the importance of K-12 outreach programs. While a student at Bear Creek High School, Monisha attended Engineering Days at the CU Boulder campus. Engineers at Colorado-based Raytheon (Aurora) and Coors (Golden) mentored Monisha through "Take Our Daughters to Work Day."

Monisha earned degrees in electrical engineering and political science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and an MBA from Yale with a focus in public sector and non-profit management.
